Terschelling deer to be shot dead

Monday 09 February 2009

A group of 10 red deer smuggled onto the Wadden Sea island of Terschelling are to be shot dead, nature management minister Gerda Verburg said on Monday.

The minister said the deer are not only a traffic hazard, but are damaging the local fauna and must be removed as soon as possible.

Attempts to tranquilise and capture the deer led to just one animal being caught.

The deer were raised on a venison farm on the mainland but were bought by private individuals in November and taken to the island.

In the Netherlands, red deer are only found in the Veluwe heathland region and the Oostvaarderplassen nature reserve near Almere.
