Government inspectors are to dress up in costumes when making spot checks on bars and cafes to make sure the smoking ban is being enforced during the carnival celebrations, the AD reports on Thursday.

‘If the inspectors stand out [by not being in fancy dress], then cafes can warn each other and undermine the whole point of the checks,’ a spokeswoman for the inspectors told the paper.
Cafe owners and Liberal MP Halbe Zijlstra had urged inspectors to be more relaxed about the ban during carnival, which is celebrated mainly in the south of the country.
