MPs from across the political spectrum have called on the cabinet to take steps to improve the management of the country’s 500 plus housing corporations.

The calls come after allegations of mismanagement were made against a third housing corporation at the weekend.
Hoofddorp-based SGGP, which has just 6,200 homes under management, is said to be in financial difficulty because of irregularities and has sacked two directors.
Earlier this year, the head of the giant Rochdale corporation was sacked after allegations that he was involved in dubious property transactions. And last year the Rotterdam-based Woonbron was put under ministerial supervision following its multi-million euro investment in renovating a cruise liner.
Labour MP Staf Depla is to ask housing minister Eberhard van der Laan on Tuesday to explain what steps the government is planning to improve the supervision of housing corporations, news agency ANP reports.
Housing corporations provide most of the country’s rent-controlled housing. In total, they rent out 2.4 million homes – some 34% of the national housing stock.
Traditionally set up to provide cheap housing, they are increasingly involved in property development outside the social housing sector.
