Tourist numbers fell by 7% last year

The number of foreign tourists to the Netherlands was down 7% last year to 10.2 million, according to figures from the Dutch tourism office NBTC published on Thursday.

The biggest decrease was the number of American holiday-makers visiting the country, down by 18% at 800,000.
Tourism is expected to fall by 4% in 2009 as a result of the economic downturn, unfavourable exchange rates and the introduction of the new tax on air travel last July, says the NBTC.
