Firework ban to be discussed in parliament

Calls for a ban on firework sales to private individuals must be discussed in parliament because an online petition has attracted the necessary 40,000 names.

Since the beginning of January, campaigners have been able to use the internet to gather support for what are known as ‘citizens’ initiatives’.
The organisers said they were surprised they had reached the target so quickly. Earlier this week, there was talk of 31,000.
The petition, called More pleasure from fewer fireworks, wants to restrict firework displays to professionals, and says local councils should organise New Year events.
Thousands of people are injured by fireworks during the New Year celebrations every year in Holland.
Support
According to opinion pollster Maurice de Hond, 49% of the Dutch support a ban on firework sales and 47% are against it.
Fireworks in the Netherlands are already strictly controlled and can only be bought for a few days before December 30. They may only be set off for a few hours on the day itself.
