Essential word list drawn up for young kids

Amsterdam city council has drawn up a list of 3,000 words which all young children should know before they move into the third year of primary school, at around the age of six.

The aim is to help children who speak little or no Dutch get a good start at school.
The list, which is broken down into a chart for beginners and for kids in their second year, includes words such as juicy (sappig), wizard (tovenaar) and surroundings (woonomgeving).
