Real Madrid pay €27m for Huntelaar

Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will leave the Amsterdam football club to join Spain’s Real Madrid under a €27m transfer deal agreed on Tuesday evening.

A prolific goal scorer, the 25-year-old Huntelaar will help fill the gap left by fellow Dutch player Ruud van Nistelrooy, Real Madrid’s star striker, who will not play again this season because of a knee injury.
Huntelaar, who is himself recovering from an ankle injury, will fly today to Madrid for a medical and to be presented to the club’s fans. The contract with the Spanish club is for four and a half years.
The striker, whose nickname is The Hunter, will bring the number of Dutch players at the Spanish club to six. Real Madrid is struggling in the league and only just managed to qualify for the knock-out stage of the European Champion’s League.
Huntelaar, who has scored 105 goals in 136 games for Ajax said the move was ‘very special’, reports the Ajax website. ‘Ajax are getting a nice sum of money for me,’ he added.
Ajax manager Marco van Basten said Huntelaar ‘deserves the move’ and that it was impossible to keep the player in Amsterdam any longer.
Dario Cvitanich, the Argentinian striker Ajax purchased last season, is expected to replace Huntelaar. But the club could splash out on the transfer market.
