Icesave clients to get cash for Christmas

Dutch clients with savings in the bankrupt Icelandic internet bank Icesave are to have up to €100,000 of their money returned before Christmas, according to Dutch media reports.

The Dutch central bank is to start with the repayments in mid-December according to a letter sent to parliament by finance minister Wouter Bos on Friday.
Landsbanki, the parent company of Icesave, on Friday published its first ‘information bulletin’ inviting Icesave savers in the Netherlands to submit data so that it can establish how much money, plus interest, individuals had in its savings accounts on October 13.
The newsletter confirms the Dutch branch of Landsbanki owes a total of around €1.7bn to over 128,000 individual savers and €250m to a number of (semi-)government bodies and firms.
There is also €4m outstanding to other creditors such as suppliers and the tax office.
The newsletter also says that an initial inventory indicates that Landsbanki NL had extended business credit worth around €600m, mainly in the Netherlands.
