Dutch press praise election of ObamaThursday 06 November 2008 The Dutch press is in congratulatory mood following Barak Obama's win in the US presidential elections. Cheerful photos of the Obama family break up the acres of text given over to an analysis of the election and what will happen after Obama is sworn in as president on January 20. Two wars and a crisis Under the headline ‘Obama promises hopeful world new American leadership’, the Financieele Dagblad points out that the new president will have to deal with two wars and a financial crisis. The paper also says that Obama's election did nothing to steady nerves on Wall Street where the Dow Jones fell by 5%. NRC.next quotes the veteran American political journalist Mark Halpersin as saying that Obama is 'a much smarter politician than Bill Clinton ever was'. But it also says that he is not the anti-establishment figure he claims to be and has always chosen the side of the establishment to further his career. The paper devotes eight pages to post-election coverage. Still, most of the papers are relieved that the 'eight year neo-conservative nightmare' has come to an end. The Volkskrant’s entire front cover is dedicated to Obama (‘America elects first black president. This is our moment. Yes, we can’) including a huge photograph. Inside there are another six pages of post-election fever. Anticlimax But there is also almost a feeling of anti-climax. In the Amsterdam paper Parool, the city’s mayor Job Cohen expresses the generally held view that 'it won't be long before there's a feeling of disappointment'. Alexander Pechtold, leader of the D66 democratic party agrees, telling the paper: 'His plans are based on the financial situation of 18 months ago and he will not be able to make them a reality'. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
What happened during the almost two years, the Democrats were back in the majority? The financial crisis is as a result of failure from both parties to fulfill their responsibility and related to the Mortgage crisis, caused mostly by the Democrats and the President who failed to provide the proper leadership. The war was started with the consensus of both parties, later on denied when things went wrong. Sandra, you are asking to work together without blame games and finger pointing yet, you blame and point your finger at the Bush/GOP, who are not the only ones at fault. I hope that the Republicans will support the new president elect and not behave as the left did, when they started their Bush hating from day one, because they did not get their way. My only concern is, that Obama can not do what he promised he would, because their simply is no money available to do so, unless like the Dutch, we have to give 50-55 cents of every dollar earned to the government. That would be the end of the America we used to know. I honestly feel that Barack Obama will have an almost impossible job to do, catering to the far left, the Pelosi and Reid left and almost half the people in the center. Like MoveOn.org says, they contributed almost 80 million dollars to his campaign, so they expect to see the results. Personally, I wish him all the best and as a conservative, I will respect him as our President and support him, provided we are going in the right direction, as indicated by the majority of the population. By Hank Kemp | November 6, 2008 3:14 PM I am a white woman, over 50,from the USA and I feel Barack Obama is the BEST thing that has come along, for the USA, in a very long time. We cannot judge what the Democrats have and have not done, in the past 2 yrs, since the Republicans were in power for so many more years, before. Let's jus ALL sit back, say our prayers and wish the BEST for our New Administration. We need to ALL come together as 1 Nation... By LB | November 6, 2008 7:18 PM I wish him all the best in his presidency. I think he world as whole has to come together as one world and fight together all the problems the world is facing. He can not do it alone but together we shall over come.He will serve as the modern day MLK for the minority in the society to aim the sun. People cannot expect Obama to solve all world crisis, especially overnight. First, Obama and his party have to undue the damage that the bush administration created. It took 8 years for Bush/Gop to get us in this financial crisis and two wars that is ripping the world apart. We now face a huge mess, so it is going to take some time to fix this mess, and it will take all countries to work together, equally and peacefully without the blame games and finger pointing.
