Americans in Holland celebrate election

Wednesday 05 November 2008

Thousands of Dutch people and Americans in the Netherlands followed the US presidential elections via tv, radio and at specially organised events throughout the country which ran into the early hours of Wednesday morning.

At the Kurhaus Hotel in Scheveningen the US embassy co-hosted a huge sponsored breakfast bash from 5am for several hundred guests who watched the events across the Atlantic unfold on a huge screen while they helped themselves to a bagels and bacon buffet – with lots of coffee.

And Amsterdam's Hilton Hotel was the venue for a major all-night event organised by the American Chamber of Commerce and the Wall Street Journal.

The traditional election night of debates and performances in The Melkweg in Amsterdam was totally sold out with an audience of 2,200 while just round the corner on Leidseplein, the Dutch branch of the Democrats Abroad organisation followed the excitement in the Boom Chicago threatre.

Amsterdam's Montessori high school also held an election breakfast from 5am for senior school pupils.

It was great to be part of something knowing the folks back home were all watching too. I got my vote in.

We were at the Melkweg, a blast. An American party in Holland, what could be better. Now Obama needs to make his promises come true. It wont be easy but we are rooting for him.

We hung American flags in our apartment windows and had a bunch of people round to watch the proceedings. We were glad, come morning, that we could proudly leave the flags up!

I was at the Hilton and the crew from the AABC did one hell of a job! Hardcore political junkies of all stripes were there to soak up the scene and the experience actually made me grateful that I wasn't able to get tickets to Boom Chicago's event (as fantastic as I'm sure it was!).

To our Dutch friends and American expats, it has been a long, long eight years but there were many of us here in the States who did not give up that we could change things one day. “We did it!” Millions of us, just ordinary Americans joined Obama’s campaign volunteering, opening our wallets and making sure change would come. I voted early in the morning in Washington where I waited over an hour to cast my vote. From there I left with friends to volunteer in northern VA a red state that has now turned to blue. Last night after it was clear Obama had won, spontaneous celebrations appeared all over the city of Washington shutting down streets and filling the air with whoops and hollers that went on well into the morning hours. Neighbors literally appeared from their homes standing on their stoops cheering and toasting Obama. Strangers were dancing together in celebration; revelers drove up and down the streets honking their horns and some of the city largest thoroughfares were shut down as pedestrians spilled onto the roads celebrating. I have never seen anything like this.

Democrats Abroad Netherlands hosted an amazing party at Boom Chicago in Amsterdam for more than 350 Americans living in Holland - and toasted our new president with a glass of bubbly. The atmosphere was amazing - and it was wonderful to be among fellow Americans while we anxiously awaited the announcement, "Barack Obama wins"! Congratulations world - this time we've got a real leader in the White House. I am proud of my country.

I, too, am excited for change to begin in America. Now I can finally move back there.

I still can't believe it - the Republicans didn't steal the election! No Florida re-count! No close-call Ohio humiliation!
The Democrats won the White House! ... all this and we made history with the 1st-ever black president - from my home town of Chicago. Amazing! But the real miracle - the real 'Mandela moment'- will be when Obama wins over the many, many McCain supporters who are convinced he will ruin the nation.
