Alkmaar retain lead in premier league

AZ of Alkmaar held on to the number one spot in the football premier league with a convincing 3-0 home victory over FC Twente on Sunday.

AZ have 22 points, the same as Amsterdam's Ajax and NAC Breda but have a better goal average.

Second-placed Ajax thumped five goals past Rotterdam's Sparta in Amsterdam on Sunday to win 5-2 and were one of three teams to score five goals at the weekend.

In third spot NAC Breda picked three points at De Graafschap of Doetinchem, winning 2-0 on Friday.

Reigning champions PSV of Eindhoven fell further from the top after a 1-0 defeat to NEC in Nijmegen on Saturday.

Rotterdam's Feyenoord, who have been in the doldrums of late because of a lack of scoring power, fired into action at home on Sunday, thrashing FC Utrecht 5-2.
