Kids drink more than parents think

Teenagers drink three times as much as their parents think they do, according to new research from the Trimbos institute which studies addiction.

While one in five parents thinks their child has tried cannabis, one in three teenagers actually has, the research shows.
Some 4,000 parents and 7,500 secondary school pupils were involved in the study.
The research also shows how parents’ attitudes to drinking change as their children get older. Some 75% of the parents with children of 12 years old thought kids under 16 should not drink at all, but only 50% of the parents of 15-year-olds thought the same.
Heaviest drinkers
Dutch teenagers are among the heaviest drinkers in Europe, and the problem is particularly acute in rural areas.
In reaction, youth affairs minister André Rouvoet pointed out that local councils are being given the power to experiment with a ban on all alcohol sales to those under18. Beer, wine and pre-mixed cocktails can currently be bought by 16-year-olds.
A change in the law is also being planned which would give local councils the right to set a curfew for youngsters who go to clubs and discos, according to news agency ANP.
