Consumers, firms pessimistic about economy

Consumer and producer confidence in the economy fell sharply in October compared with the previous month, the national statistics office CBS reports on Tuesday.

The consumer confidence index fell to minus 27 last month from minus 22 in September.
Consumers expect the economy to worsen, are less willing to spend and are postponing large purchases such a cars and washing machines, said the CBS.
Producer confidence, meanwhile, fell 0.5 of a point to minus 6.1 in the same period, its lowest level in more than five years.
The monthly decline is the biggest since records began in 1985. Companies are receiving fewer orders and stockpiles are growing.
