A home-owning family with two children and net income of nearly €3,000 a month should have a savings buffer of €15,100 to pay for holidays, repairs and replacing appliances, according to calculations by the family budget institute Nibud.

A single person in a rented flat with take-home earnings of €1,800 needs €6,300 in savings, Nibud says. It hopes the figures, contained in a new report out on Wednesday, will encourage people to save more.
