Widespread coverage of conned Verdonk

With headlines like ‘Rita Verdonk conned’ and ‘Verdonk victim of smooth talk’, Thursday’s papers report how the politician was promised €135,000 by a ‘donor’ for 1,800 tickets to the launch of her nationalist Trots op Nederland party in Amsterdam.

The money has still not been paid into the TON bank account.
‘We now have to pay the costs from campaign funds,’ her adviser Kay van de Linde told the Telegraaf. The paper says the bogus backer is thought to be 39-year-old Nick van der L, a man with a colourful history involving ‘dubious projects and bankruptcies’ .
The Volkskrant says the money was promised during a personal conversation between the politician and Van der L who said he was a former stock exchange trader and a investor, now living in Dubai.
Verdonk’s advisor told the Volkskrant that ‘Rita is very trusting’. More trust in politics is the creed of her new party.’ Verdonk will not be pressing charges.
