Number of Muslims lower than thought

There are around 200,000 practising Muslims in the Netherlands, rather than the 850,000 usually quoted, according to Groningen University researchers in Tuesday’s Telegraaf.

The enormous difference lies in the fact that earlier research assumed everyone who comes from a Muslim country is also a practising Muslim. The university made its count by asking imams how many people attend their mosque. Because most mosque-goers are male, each one was assumed to have a wife and two children to reach the total.
