Medium faces court over tv star death

A medium and two doctors who practise alternative therapies must be prosecuted for their role in the death of tv personality Sylvia Millecam from untreated breast cancer, an Amsterdam court ruled on Wednesday.

The case against the ‘healing medium’ Jomanda and the doctors was brought by campaigners against alternative and unproven therapies, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.
A lower court had ruled that Jomanda should not face legal proceedings. There is no further appeal possible.
Jomanda denies she knew Millecam had cancer and that she persuaded her not to take traditional treatment.
By law, alternative therapists are supposed to tell their patients about the limited effects and the risks associated with their treatments.
The court said arguments that Millecam was an adult who could make her own decisions carried no weight. ‘In delicate situations there is no question of free choice,’ the Volkskrant quoted the court as saying.
Millecam died in 2001.
