Explosive rise in child porn websites

The number of child pornography websites distributed from the Netherlands has risen ‘explosively’, official monitors said on tv show Nova on Thursday night.

In 2006, some 100 sites were reported to the national child porn registry, but last year this had soared to 700, spokeswoman Liesbeth Groeneveld told the programme.
The director of one internet service provider – Leaseweb in Haarlem – told the show he had removed such sites in the past. The company operates 11,000 servers supporting hundreds of thousands of websites.
Last August it emerged that internet providers KPN, XS4all and Tiscali are refusing to block or remove websites which carry child pornography.
The national police force published a blacklist of sites publishing child pornography at the beginning of 2007 and asked providers to block access. Only cable company UPC has done so, but even its filter does not work properly, news agency ANP said on Friday.
