Shortage of teachers worsens
Thursday 27 March 2008
The shortage of secondary school teachers rose from 3.3% to 4.3% in the third quarter of 2007, reports Thursday’s Volkskrant, quoting figures from the education ministry.
It is the first time since 2002 that the teacher shortage has risen so sharply, the ministry says
Schools said 90% of vacancies were difficult to fill last year, compared to 64% in 2006, the paper reports.
The shortage of teachers means that 35% of schools have to cancel lessons, up from 24% in 2006.
