More strikes on the way
Wednesday 12 March 2008
Police trade unions said on Wednesday they will be stepping up their industrial action after talks on pay stalled once again, according to various media reports.
Two opposition parties have called for an emergency debate on the issue after last-ditch talks between the home affairs minister Guusje ter Horst and unions on Tuesday failed to resolve the impasse. The anit-immigration PVV party said talks had failed because of the minister’s arrogant attitude.
The unions and minister have been negotiating a new pay and conditions deal for several months.
A union spokesman declined to comment on the form the new industrial action would take. At the weekend three major premier league games were cancelled because the police refused to carry out their normal duties.
As the government wrestles with the police unions, discontent over pay is brewing in other parts of the public sector. Some 300,000 nursing staff are expected to follow the police's example. And teachers are also planning strikes in The Hague and Delft on 26 March, reports ANP.
