Drugs policy may be investigated

Thursday 06 March 2008

A majority of MPs are likely to back calls for a far-reaching investigation into Dutch drugs policy following reports that an increasing number of young people are getting into trouble with soft drugs.

The Netherlands has an official policy of turning a blind eye to small quantities of marijuana and cannabis for personal use.

My guess is that this investigation will be used to start enforcing the illegality of soft drugs. This will change the problem from a problem with young people to a problem that crosses all age ranges. Use the US as an example. Cannabis is illegal in the US, and the numbers of users there is staggering. My hope is that the Dutch government does not create a larger criminal underworld than already exists here, because that is exactly what will happen if the coffee shops are closed.
