'Berlusconi will veto Alitalia takeover'
Friday 21 March 2008
Silvio Berlusconi, tipped to become Italy's prime minister after April's vote, said on Friday he would veto Alitalia’s takeover by Air France-KLM if he wins the election.
News agency ANP quoted Berlusconi as saying the bid was unacceptable in a number of areas and arrogant. He called on Italian investors to put together a rival takeover package.
Alitalia’s unions are also opposed to the Dutch-French takeover, as is the operator of Malpensa airport near Milan. But the current government, led by Romano Prodi supports it.
