Ryanair protests to EU over ‘unfair’ eco tax

Budget airline Ryanair has made a formal complaint to the EU’s competition commissioner Neelie Kroes, accusing the Dutch government of giving unfair state support to Schiphol airport and KLM.

Ryanair is angry that the new eco tax on air tickets will not apply to transit flights. Schiphol has more transit passengers than any other airport in Europe, accounting for around 40% of the total.
Ryanair claims some 95% of transit passengers are carried by KLM/AirFrance.
‘The commission should require the Dutch government to either scrap this tax or to apply it to all passengers – both point-to-point and transfer at Schiphol, and end this €400 million subsidy to KLM / Air France,’ Ryanair said in a statement.
