180 tons of fish seized in fraud probe

Agriculture ministry inspectors have confiscated 180 tons of fish in the fishing village of Urk in connection with a serious fraud investigation, reports the Volkskrant on Friday.

The fish traders and processors are suspected of passing off yellow fin sole from Asia as plaice which sells at a much higher price.
The inspectors carried out their searches on Wednesday and Thursday at eight locations. They not only took away fish but also company books and administration, says the paper.
In October 2007, 27 men from Urk were heavily fined for breaking EU fishing quotas by putting plaice through their books as other non-quota fish.
