Dutch central bank governor Nout Wellink will tell parliament on Wednesday that the subprime crisis is not a major problem for Dutch banks at present but could hit institutions if it persists, reports British news agency Reuters.

‘He will say that subprime risks are not a major problem for Dutch banks. Nevertheless, if market turbulence persists or spreads, Dutch financial institutions could be hit harder,’ a source ‘with knowledge of Wellink’s position’ told Reuters.
Wellink is due to appear before parliament’s finance committee on Wednesday to answer questions on the credit crisis.
Earlier this month, Wellink told a television programme that the government should take measures to counteract the effect of US economic problems on Europe.
Other people appearing before the committee today include former finance minister Onno Ruding and experts from Van Lanschot Bankiers, ABN Amro and the ABP civil service pension fund – one of the biggest in the world.
