Four children killed in Christmas Eve fire

Four girls aged between one and eight have been killed by a fire in their parents’ Chinese restaurants in Arnemuiden on Christmas Eve.

The family lived above the restaurant which was open at the time of the blaze. All the guests were evacuated safely.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. The bodies of the children could not be recovered until Tuesday morning because of the risk of the building collapsing.
‘This is extremely sad,’ Middelburg mayor Koos Schouwenaar told news agency ANP after visiting the scene of the tragedy on Monday evening.
