Schools must be required by law to register all violent and criminal incidents with the schools inspectorate and, in some cases, report them to the police, says junior education minister Marja van Bijsterveldt in a letter to parliament.

The Christian Democrat minister thinks the compulsory reporting of violence and crime is necessary to provide a clear picture of the safety situation in schools, reports Tuesday’s Volkskrant.
Van Bijsterveldt says that the situation has improved but that serious incidents still occur. She wants teachers to receive better training on how to deal with conflicts, reports the Volkskrant.
The minister says she wants to create 2,500 extra jobs so that schools can build better links between education, sport and culture.
Meanwhile, nine pupils between 15 and 18 years old were arrested at the Graaf Huyn College in Geleen on Monday when a pupil strike got out of hand, the Volkskrant reports.
