Suspected blackmailer Willem Holleeder should be given a 12-year jail term if convicted, the public prosecution department says.

His nine co-accused face sentences ranging from community service to four years in jail.
Holleeder and the others are accused of blackmailing three property tycoons, two of whom have since been murdered. One other charge of blackmail was dropped by the prosecution department last week because of lack of evidence.
Holleeder is accused of ‘multiple membership’ of a criminal organisation as well as blackmail. He faces a long jail term, the prosecution said, because of his previous convictions. Holleeder was previously jailed for kidnapping beer magnate Freddie Heineken.
The Volkskrant reports that the prosecution department used an ‘audiovisual presentation’ to make its case on Monday afternoon. It was, the paper says, ‘a dramatic high point’, using the voice of murdered property man Willem Endstra who claimed the blackmail money was looked after by others on Holleeder’s behalf.
The presentation was misleading, lawyer Gabriël Meijers told the paper. ‘A film looks extremely convincing, but the director chooses what you see. The reality is not a film.’
