Teacher training drop-outs almost 39%

Almost 39% of first-year teacher training students dropped out in the 2006/07 academic year, up from the normal 25% drop-out rate, according to figures from the HBO college council.

The council said the drop-out rate has gone up because of the introduction of compulsory spelling and arithmetic tests introduced to curb declining standards.
