MPs back ending Hirsi Ali US security deal

Wednesday 10 October 2007

A majority of MPs supports the cabinet's decision to stop paying for Ayan Hirsi Ali's security in the US, news agency ANP said on Tuesday evening.

Justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin said during an emergency debate that he could no longer take responsibility for protecting the former MP while she was in the US because he did not know what risks she was facing there.

Hirsi Ali has said she is willing to pay for her own security but needs more time to raise the cash.

Hirsch Ballin told MPs that a lot of time and attention has been invested into making proper arrangements. 'At a certain moment, it's enough,' he said. Prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende made similar comments last week.
