Dutch vital to Australia role in Uruzgan

Monday 03 September 2007

Australia may have to review its military deployment in Afghanistan if the Netherlands decides to withdraw its troops from the UN mission in Uruzgan, says Australian defence minister Brendan Nelson.

The Australians depend on Dutch forces to ensure secure operations in Uruzgan, Nelson is reported as saying to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Meanwhile, some Dutch media reported on Friday that a majority of Norwegian MPs are opposed to joining the mission. The Netherlands is hoping to find a third country to work in the region alongside Dutch and Australian troops.

The cabinet will decide later this month whether to extend the Dutch mission past its original August 2008 deadline.
