Dutch bioligist released in Brazil pending appeal

Dutch biologist Marc van Roosmalen has been released from prison pending an appeal against his 14 years jail sentence issued by a Brazilian court in June, reports ANP news service.

Van Roosmalen, voted ‘Hero of the Planet’ by Time Magazine in 2000, was found guilty of ‘stealing apes’ after non-registered orphan monkeys were found at his house in the Amazon region. According to his lawyer, the court decision is political rather than judicial.
During his time in the Amazon Roosmalen has discovered dozens of new species.
