Tour de France dominates papers

The doping scandals surrounding the Tour de France cycling race and Rabobank’s decision to sack race leader Michael Rasmussen generated a great deal of coverage in today’s papers and in their editorials.

The AD called for a major clean up of the Rabo cycling team in general. After the amateurish goings-on this summer, it is inevitable that heads will roll.
The Telegraaf says it is notable that the team did not know the whereabouts of its lead rider just four weeks before the Tour was to begin. Mistakes have been made that the sport call ill-afford.
The Volkskrant says it is disappointing that efforts to clean up the sport have failed but given the millions of followers, the Tour cannot be abandoned.
Trouw argues that the controversy around Rasmussen should lead to a radical change in course for the Rabo cycling team. Rather than focus on foreign talent, it should go back to its Dutch roots, the paper says.
