Taskforce to get more women into work

A taskforce to increase women’s participation in the labour market is to be set up on January 1, reports Tuesday’s Financieele Dagblad. At present only 54% of women in the Netherlands work and 70% of them have part time jobs – the latter is the highest percentage in the world.

The announcement by the government, trade unions and employers comes on the eve of Wednesday’s employment summit which is intended to create 200,000 new jobs.
‘It’s about women who say they want to work. We are not saying that women have to work full-time their whole lives. We are looking for the perfect strategy to tempt them,’ Agnes Jongerius, head of the FNV trade union federation told the paper.
Two out of three women in the Netherlands must have jobs of at least 12 hours a week by 2010 to meet European Union agreements.
