Major forest fire put out

Firefighters say a serious fire in woods near Bergeijk in Noord-Brabant province has destroyed half a hectare of forest. The cause of the blaze is not yet known. Several forest and heathland areas are on high fire risk alert after more than a month without rain.

The traditional freedom fire run will take place this year with hurricane lamps instead of blazing torches because of the risk of fire, organisers have decided.
Some 1,100 runners from 60 towns are expected in Wageningen on Friday evening to light their lamps and carry the fires nationwide. The ceremony marks the German surrender at Wageningen in 1945.
