Action needed on pension shortfall

Action is needed to reduce the number of pensioners living in poverty because they don’t qualify for a full state pension (AOW), junior social affairs minister Ahmed Aboutaleb said on Wednesday evening.

The number of people with a pension gap – now one in seven pensioners – is set to soar to over 434,000 by 2017 as first generation immigrants reach retirement age.
To qualify for a full pension, someone must have been resident in the Netherlands from the age of 15 to 65. Each missing year leads to a 2% cut in pension rights.
The minister said the social insurance bank SVB and local authorities which are responsible for welfare payments, should work much more closely together to make sure people were not living in poverty.
