Thieves, vandals and marijuana growers who agree to pay their fines with a direct debit card at the police station are entitled to a 20% discount, the public prosecution office in Zwolle says in today’s Telegraaf.

‘It might sound a bit strange that we give a discount but it saves society money if we don’t have to process lots of paperwork,’ spokeswoman Tineke Zwart told the paper.
As well as less administration, the police expect the discount system to save time and money in tracing non-payers. The discount only applies to certain crimes.
