The number of building permits awarded for new homes rose 16% in 2006 to 96,000, the highest figure in almost 10 years, says government statistics office CBS. The most permits (23,000) were given in the province of Zuid-Holland (which includes Rotterdam and The Hague).
The only province which saw a fall in new homes was Noord-Brabant. In total the Netherlands has seven million homes.
