Family main obstacle to organ donation

Almost 60% of people who are asked to donate the organs of a dead family member refuse, according to figures from Dutch transplant foundation NTS. ‘That is a lot,’ said the NTS spokesperson Bernadette Haase in today’s Volkskrant.

‘The further south you go in Europe, the more people are willing to donate organs.’
Some 1068 people are currently on the waiting list for a kidney; 44 for a new heart. On Monday, the donor register, where people can be listed as potential donors, launched a new campaign for members in an effort to boost transplant numbers.
