19 arrests in ‘calm’ Utrecht

Police in Utrecht arrested 19 people around the neighbourhood of Ondiep on Wednesday night, mainly on charges of insulting behaviour and vandalism. Compared with Tuesday, when 135 people were arrested, police said it had been a ‘relatively quiet’ evening.

The entire neighhourhood was sealed off for the second night running in an effort to keep out trouble-makers from outside the area. Many of those arrested on Tuesday night had come with the express aim of causing trouble, police said.
The trouble in Ondiep stems from the shooting dead of a 54-year-old man by police on Sunday evening. Locals say the man, who was waving a knife, had been plagued by a gang of youths.
