Anne Frank to be an honorary American?
Tuesday 27 February 2007
An American politician has asked for Anne Frank to be given honorary American citizenship posthumously, a tribute that has only ever been awarded to six people, including Mother Teresa and Winston Churchill.
Democrat Steve Israel said it is what her father would have wanted for her had she survived the Second World War.
The Amsterdam-based Anne Frank Foundation has reacted positively to the suggestion, says ANP.
US media however have reported that Frank family descendents are less enthusiastic. Anne Frank's diary, written in Amsterdam in the years she hid from the Nazis, has become famous across the world.
