New car sales rise in 2006

New car sales rose by 45% in 2006 to 484,000, according to figures from motoring organisations BOVAG and RAI. Volkswagen was the most popular brand for the second year running, while Toyota and Fiat both saw sales up by more than 20%.
Volvo and Renault lost the most support. Around 34% of new cars were bought by women last year; up from 32% in 2005.
