Football hooligans
Prosecutors have called for three-year jail sentences for two football hooligans involved in an attack on supporters of The Hague club ADO. Some 70 Ajax (Amsterdam) fans attacked the ADO clubhouse in February, wielding knives, sticks and molotov cocktails.

Foreign names
The Labour party (PvdA) in Amsterdam has called for an end to the use of the word ‘allochtoon’ to describe Dutch nationals of Moroccan and Turkish descent. The word literally means ‘non native’ and only intensifies the feeling of ‘us and them’, party leader Manon van der Garde told the Parool newspaper.
Company pensions
Dutch firms paid twice as much towards their workers’ pensions in 2004 as they did in 2000, says national statistics office CBS. In 2000, 4% of the cost of employing a worker went on pensions, four years later it was 8%. But employer contributions towards other social security benefits fell.
In the money
Just under half (45%) of women aged between 16 and 65 can stand on their own two feet financially, according to statistics office CBS. In particular, women under the age of 25 are financially independent, says the CBS.
Young mums
Some 2,795 babies were born to teenage mothers last year, down 200 on 2004. The number of teenage mothers has been declining since reaching record levels in 2001.
