American comedian Margaret Cho returns to Amsterdam

American comedian Margaret Cho loves Amsterdam’s canals but hates the mosquitos.

American comedian and actress Margaret Cho is back in Amsterdam later this month on the last leg of her Mother tour.

Cho, born on December 5, 1968 in San Francisco, is of Korean origin and best known for her sharp stand-up routines in which she looks at social and political problema, often in relation to race and sexuality.

Mother looks at sex, gay politics (Cho is bisexual), drugs, guns, and identity and, says Cho, offers a nontraditional look at motherhood. The show is sold out, but DutchNews.nl caught up with her for a brief chat.

What is your favourite part of Amsterdam?
I love the canals but the mosquitos always eat me alive. They love to bite me.

Do you get recognised when you come here?
I don’t get recognized much in general. I kind of fit in anywhere and I don’t cause much of a fuss about it.

Do you feel like your material plays well outside of the US?
I think my material plays well everywhere because It doesn’t fit in anywhere. I’m an outsider in every way.

Your material can be very American-centric. Do you have to alter it for a non-US audience?
In general, I just stay in the moment of performance and try to figure out what is happening right then and there. I see what the feeling in the room is. I try to tailor my shows to the moment that I am performing, and make each show as a special unique work for the people who have come.

What are the best and worst parts of touring?
I love touring. I love to see the world and meet so many different people. It’s very exciting and inspiring. The worst part is that I suffer from terrible jet lag. Well, the jet lag and getting up early in the morning. I don’t really mind because the adventure is worth it.

Margaret Cho will be on stage in Amsterdam on December 13 2013 at the Comedy Theater in de Nes, Amsterdam. The theatre regularly has English-language performers and hosts an international comedy night on Friday evenings. Website
