Sales of A brands fell last year as soaring inflation hit spending power, according to a new report by market research group Circana and food industry magazine Distrifood.

In total, A brands lost a few hundred million euros in sales last year, as consumers turned from products such as sliced roast beef to sausage, Circana’s Rini Emonds told broadcaster NOS.

In total, however, A brand income rose 3% to €100 billion last year, thanks to higher prices, Circana said.

Circana and Distrifood have compiled a new ranking of the top 100 supermarket brands, and say consumers spend around 20% of their money on these items.

Top of the list are cigarette brands Marlboro and Camel, but they will head the ranking for the last time. From next year, cigarette sales in supermarkets will end by law.

InBev beer brand Hertog Jan has also overtaken Heineken in the top 10 while pizza maker Dr Oetker is a debutant in 10th place.
