Home owners will have to pay an average of €30 more in local taxes next year, a rise of 3.6%, according to calculations by lobby group Vereniging Eigen Huis (VEH). The figure is based on the 2023 plans drawn up by 107 of the Netherlands 344 local authority areas.

In around 25% of council areas, local taxes are rising by more than €50 a year and the average payment will be €887, VEH said.

Local taxes are made up of property tax (ozb) which is only paid by home owners, plus waste and sewage charges. Councils are free to set their own fees.

Home owners in the Zuid-Holland village of Teyling face the biggest rise of €167 in their annual charges, due to rubbish collection fees almost doubling. while in Doetinchem, local taxes are actually going down by €83.

In The Hague, charges are going up by 19% to an average of €821 a year, while in Utrecht the rise is 8%. Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven were not included in the survey.
