Almost 1,800 more people died in October than would be expected in a normal year, according to Dutch statistics office CBS.

There were ‘excess’ deaths in every week of the month, particularly amongst people in care homes and those over the age of 65. More than 450 people a week more than expected died in October, more than double the rate of around 200 excess weekly deaths in September.

More women died than in a normal year, in particular. There was a rise in coronavirus patients in hospital in October.

The service also reported that 44,760 people died from coronavirus between the start of the pandemic in March 2020 and the end of June 2022. There was also a flu epidemic this spring.

The latest death figures are an estimate based on 82% of death certificates submitted for the month of October.
