Some 9,500 new homes were created by converting former offices, shops and other commercial properties last year, national statistics agency CBS said on Friday.

The figure is down on 2021 and the peak of 2020, when conversions boosted the housing stock by nearly 12,500, the CBS said.

In total, just over 80,000 new homes were realised last year, which is below the government’s current target of 100,000.

Initial estimates also suggest 4,500 homes were added to the national housing stock via conversions in the first six months of 2022.

One in eight of the converted properties in 2021 was in Amsterdam, followed by Groningen, Rotterdam and The Hague.
