Ajax hopes of reaching the knock out rounds of this year’s Champions League competition are in tatters on Thursday, after the Amsterdammers lost 4-2 to Napoli and Liverpool overwhelmed Rangers 1-7.

Third place in Group A is now the most realistic option for Ajax, who have three points from four games.

Last week Ajax were hammered 1-6 by Napoli in the first leg, in what was their worst defeat in European football.

‘It may sound a bit strange having just lost 4-2, but I thought we played a good match,’ Dutch coach Alfred Schreuder told RTL7 after Wednesday’s game. ‘I have to admit that they [Napoli] are strong opponents. You see that in the way they play, in their tempo, in everything.’

Ajax meet Liverpool at home on October 26 and Rangers away on November 1.

AZ of Alkmaar, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord are all in European football action on Thursday night.
