Bird flu has been found on a farm in Groningen and over 100,000 broiler chickens – which were being raised to eat rather than lay eggs – have been destroyed as a precaution.

One other farm which is three kilometres from the affected business in Kiel-Windeweer is now being monitored for signs of the disease, which has led to over 4.5 million bird being culled so far.

The Kiel-Windeweer factory farm is the fourth in the province to have bird flu in a two week period.

Wageningen University is currently carrying out research on a potential vaccine and the first results are due in December.
